Starfish Brooch: Vintage Sterling Silver
This pin was made by Jo Michels. He was born in 1893 and died sometime in the 1940's. He lived in New York City and after his death, his wife, Jane kept his jewelry shop open until the 1950's. This is truly an antique!
The starfish is fairly large 2.5" x 2.5" and weighs 0.6 oz. (17g). It does need to be cleaned; after all, it has to be 80+/- years old. But we are leaving it as-is, just in case the new owner likes the patina.
Note: Regarding the flat spot near the center of the brooch; there is a picture of another one of these brooches in a book with the same flat spot. If any of you know what it is for, please email us and let us know. Our best guess is that it is either 1) an artistic statement or 2) a pearl or other gem stone originally went there.
